- Get a home energy audit every few years with your power company to find out different ways to save money on your energy bill.
- Participate in your power company’s energy-saving program. Many programs shut down electric appliances for short bursts of time during peak hours.
- Adjust your thermostat to a comfortable temperature. Every degree that is turned up on the thermostat can save as much as 5 percent on your energy bill.
- Change your air conditioner filter. A dirty filter causes the unit to run longer and inefficiently.
- If you have drafty doors invest in weather- stripping kits.
- If you have any cracks or small holes around your windows and exterior walls try and seal these energy leaks by caulking the cracks and small holes.
- If you are in the market to buy a new appliance like a washing machine or refrigerator make sure there is a sticker that says “Energy Star” which means that it meets the standards set by the Department of Energy and the Environmental Protection Agency.
- See if your power company gives out rebates whenever you buy energy saving equipment.
- Use compact fluorescent bulbs which is more energy-efficient, consumes little power, and generates little heat instead of the standard incandescent bulbs.
