There are  many myths floating around when it comes to saving  cash, so in order debunk some of these  myths, let’s take a look at these things that are   costing  a fortune!

1. High-Octane Gas, Are you filling up at the pump with the best gas possible?  While many gas companies love when you fill up with the premium blend, studies have shown that the premium blend often doesn’t have any long term benefits.  Check your car’s manual and if it states that you don’t need a premium fuel, then regular unleaded will be just fine.

2. Refinancing  Mortgage, Lower mortgage rates sure do look great today, don’t they?  Well, if you think you’re going to save thousands of dollars, you may want to think again. While refinancing can save you some money, there are some circumstances where it might not help; for instance, if you’ll save only $40 a month with a new loan, and your closing costs  exceed $2,000 you might not save that much money.

3. The Clearance Rack, Don’t you just love when you go to the store and find  red tag items on clearance?  While these items are a great bargain, many deal hunters  purchase more than five to ten at a time which is not a deal when you buy more than you need just because its on clearance.

4. Can’t Save Money, Many think that because they don’t have a lot of money, they shouldn’t save.  This is  far from the truth.  In fact,  you probably have a few dollars left over every month so try  to set aside  a few bucks each time you get  paid.  For example, if you save $50 a month for the next 30 years earning 8 percent, you would have over $75,000 saved up! It’ll take awhile to get there, but if you recognize now that this is for Way down the road, there’s no harm!

5. Purchasing in Bulk,  wholesale clubs are another way to save cash, but it’s not always the case, while many items purchased in bulk can save you a lot of money, some items are better off being purchased individually, especially with coupons.  The next time you purchase a few items in bulk make sure that it is the cheapest way to save by doing a per unit cost evaluation and deciding if you really want all of that product.

6. Expensive Items last longer,  Most think that if you spend a lot of money on an item, it’s going to last forever.  While this can be the case some times, it often isn’t true.  The majority of the time an expensive item, is going to be expensive, solely based on the brand name.  A perfect example is painkiller medication.  Most opt to purchase the brand names, when the generic offers the same ingredients for a fraction of the price!

Saving money does take some work, just because you think you’re saving money, it doesn’t necessarily mean you are.  The list above is just a few of the many myths  floating around out there.

Before you make any purchase, it always best to sit down, crunch the numbers, and make sure that you’re truly saving a few dollars. Happy hunting!

1.    Ask For Coupons – You won’t get anything unless you ask! When you like a product and want to buy more of it, get in touch with the manufacturer and  let him know that you want to buy more of the item and give reasons why you like it. Ask him if he can give you coupons so that you can get it at discount. Most likely, you will get the coupons.

2.    Make Use Of Reward Programs – Almost all supermarkets have reward programs. When you make purchases, you earn points and can exchange them for coupons or redeem these points. Take part in such programs.

3.    Make Use Of Rebates – Coupons and rewards can save you a lot of money but rebates are good because you get  some of your money back on items you buy.  All you have to do is keep your eyes peeled for rebates.

4.    Use Social Media – No doubt you have a Facebook account, and so do many businesses. Most of these businesses offer coupons or products in exchange for “likes” of their page. Click like on their pages and qualify for high savings.

5.    Order Them – You can find coupons for an upcoming sale of a product. Order such coupons from a coupon service and stock them so that you can use them at the time of the sale. You may have to pay a small fee to the coupon service for the mailing. If you compare this expense with the savings, the savings will  win all the time.

With money scare and the cost of living rising, you have to make use of every resource to save money. Since grocery eats up a big part of your budget, you have to take care of it. Get as many coupons as you can and go shopping. If the grocery store limits the number of coupons that you want to use in a single shopping trip, either make a second trip to the store or ask a family member or friend to go grocery shopping with you. It will be worth the savings.

Payday loans are an increasingly popular loan, ever since they were first introduced to the UK market in 2006. Their reputation in the finance industry is far from squeaky clean however as the unregulated nature of the payday loan industry means that it has been accused of supplying expensive loans to vulnerable consumers. There are always two sides to every story however therefore let’s look at both in more detail.

A short term loan

A guaranteed payday loan is a loan to the value of $50 to $1000 which is provided for a short term of between 14 and 31 days. The APR for this is approximately 1737% which equates to $25 for every $100 borrowed. There are no credit checks when requesting this type of loan which means that it is pretty accessible to anyone who wants one regardless of credit history. Therefore the positives of this type of loan are as follows:

• They are quick and easy to apply for
• The cash deposit can be in your bank account within 24 hours
• There are no credit checks, therefore available to everyone regardless of credit history
• They can be an excellent source of income to cover the cost of unexpected emergencies such as car repairs or utility bills
• If used according to their terms and conditions, they could improve your credit score
• The loan is flexible so that if you cannot afford to repay the loan on the agreed date, it can be ‘rolled over’ until the following month (although this does incur a charge)

A long term debt

Payday loans are arguably a fast road to long term debt. The industry is largely unregulated at present which means that customers can borrow a loan and postpone the repayment as many times as they wish. This means that they can incur infinite amount of debt. Furthermore, there is no regulation around how many guaranteed payday loans a customer can apply for which again means that they can apply for several, which has alarming debt implications. There are plenty of shocking statistics regarding payday loans. The debt support trust has indeed identified the following about the profile of a typical payday loan customer:

• Has 4 payday loans on average
• Owes an average of $1,943 in payday loans
• Most payday loans customers are borrowing the loan to repay another payday loans company
• 40% of payday loan customers are borrowing to pay for everyday costs i.e. necessities not luxuries
• There is no typical payday loan customer profile and indeed teachers, accountants and pharmacists are among those who have requested this type of loan

Therefore payday loans can ultimately be a short term loan or a long term debt, depending on your current financial situation and the way in which you use the loan. Providing you use them sensibly and adhere to the terms and conditions then they are a good source of short term income. However on the negative side, if you abuse the loans and ‘rollover’ repayments or take out more than one loan, you could quickly see yourself accumulating an unrealistic amount of debt.
