I sometimes wonder if I had learned about the importance of money at an early age would I have handled it any differently; as a child I never really thought about money that much. I know my parents worked hard to provide for us but, money was not really discussed between us kids and our parents; except for them saying that we should save some of our money for a rainy day.
But of course when we got our allowance we never thought about saving for a rainy day; we promptly spent our money at the first candy or toy store that we could find.
Knowing what I know about money now, if I could turn back time I would have saved the money I received from birthdays, holidays, and babysitting. If the adult in me now could have a conversation with the child in me twenty something years ago I would have told myself to save half if not all of all the money I received.
I would learn to be responsible about money and credit as a teen so that when I went to college I would not have signed up for every credit card company that was on campus just to get the free gift. I would also know about the consequences about being in debt before it ever happened.
If there were an introduction to money class that could teach kids the basics of money, credit, and debt, I would be the first to sign up! However its never too early or late to learn about how to handle money so as I learn I will also be teaching my six year of god daughter and two year old niece how to save so that when they get to college they will be responsible about the choices they make when it come to dealing with money!
