Winter is officially a few days away, but due to a cold snap that is hovering over half of the United States including some parts of the south, many of us have had to turn our heat up sooner than expected. Since we are already on a budget the last thing we need is a higher heating bill.
So here are six ways to reduce your heating bill when it’s cold outside.
- If you have an old house with drafty windows place plastic covers over them. It won’t look pretty but it will help to keep the draft out. You can get the plastic covers from your local hardware store.
- Caulk and seal cracks around the windows, or use towels, newspapers, or anything that will act as a barrier to help keep the draft out and the room warm.
- Buy an electric space heater to help heat your house. With a space heater you are able to reduce the thermostat of your main heat to a lower level. (You can buy a space heater for as little as $15 from Home Depot or Lowe’s).
- Wear extra clothes around the house to stay warm: (sweaters, flannel, thermal underwear, sweat suits, and socks).
- Keep several warm thick blankets in all the rooms, especially if there is a draft.
- Drink tea, hot chocolate, or soup to help you stay warm.
If you try a few of these steps, then hopefully your heating bill won’t be so high when it gets cold outside.

What helps me to stay warm is layers of clothes. I layer a lot. We are lucky that we don’t pay for a heating bill (it is included in our condo HOA fee). We can heat up our house to whatever we want, and we still pay the same fee. We are lucky this way because I get cold easily.

You are so lucky about not having a heating bill. I have a small ceramic heater to help heat my place, so hopefully I won’t have a major heating bill.
